What are spark plugs?
Spark plugs are devices that generate a spark of electricity to ignite a fuel-air mixture in an internal combustion engine. In most engines, each cylinder has one spark plug.

What do they do?
The spark plug's job is to deliver an electric spark to the engine's combustion chamber to ignite the fuel. The spark must be strong enough to jump the gap between the spark plug's electrodes, but not so strong that it damages the electrodes.

How do they work?
Spark plugs have two electrodes, a ground electrode and a center electrode. The ground electrode is connected to the engine block. The center electrode is connected to the ignition coil. When the ignition coil receives a high voltage from the engine's ignition system, it generates a high voltage between the electrodes. This high voltage jumps the gap between the electrodes, causing a spark.

The spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine's combustion chamber. The mixture then burns, providing power to the engine.

Types of spark plugs

There are many types of spark plugs available, but most fall into one of two categories:

Conventional spark plugs: Conventional spark plugs have a single ground electrode. They are the most common type of spark plug.

Iridium spark plugs: Iridium spark plugs have a small, iridium-tipped center electrode. They are designed to last longer than conventional spark plugs.

How often should spark plugs be replaced?
Most manufacturers recommend that spark plugs be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. However, some iridium spark plugs can last up to 100,000 miles. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations.
